With many local creeks near flood stage and the weather warming up we remind local boaters to paddle safely. Here are a few thoughts on that subject:
- If you're not prepared, stay out of the water! - Engage your brain "before" putting on the water. - Never paddle moving water alone: NEVER! - If ANYONE in your group is uncomfortable with stream level or conditions, stay out of the water. - If anyone becomes exhausted or uncomfortable with flows or conditions at any time, get them out of the water. - "If in doubt, scout!" Know what is around the next corner TODAY or stop and find out. - Respect the power of moving water, especially at high flows. - Cold water affects your motor skills and coordination even when air temps are in the 80’s or 90’. - Have and practice the skills, knowledge and experience to safely navigate hazards before paddling anywhere. - Wear and use proper safety gear. Basic paddling safety gear (the first 5 are essential): |

This year Black Hills Paddlers is hoping to organize several group events to grow our community and connect more paddlers. We know this is short notice, but let’s do a spring paddle on Sand Creek! The gauge says 23cfs, which is paddleable but if the weatherman is right the melt should bring that up and make it even better by Sunday! Event Details: Meet at 11:00 on Sunday March 21st at Kelly Lane’s House to gather and coordinate our shuttle. Plan to depart by 11:15 and to be back in Rapid about 5:00. Kelly’s house is located at 2719 West Saint Anne (take Central blvd off Jackson Blvd and 3 blocks south 484-4074 if you need directions.) Please make sure and bring appropriate cold water gear. Remember to dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. If you need some dry gear or gloves or other apparel Global Market has a reasonable selection of gear for purchase. Many of us boaters also have extra gear to lend if arranged in advance. Bring a snack to share at the takeout if you’d like. Let’s see how big a turnout we can have! Sand Creek is a great little creek. This will be a very fun mellow run and anybody with a bit of experience can a great time on this trip. Please RSVP via email, telephone (Justin @ 343-5186), or Facebook if you plan on coming. See yah Sunday! |

Did you say a red Harmony? Thanks Sean Fahey for your longstanding post on BH Paddlers website. Sean found a spray skirt and wanted to match it with an owner. NO luck so far but he says he will bring it to the pool THIS SATURDAY! So, if anyone recognizes this skirt while Sean is out there playing with us in the pool, let us know. Whoa! Who said THIS Saturday? YES, pool time is NOW! Wait out the cold winter in a warm pool. Paddle, practice strokes, self rescue, eskimo rescue, get tips on eskimo rolling, or? We have started LOTS of new paddlers this year! And some old paddle friends still in town have dropped off our screens. Plus, there are you ‘lurkers‘ out there; quietly having a lot of fun paddling in your own special places and times. Join us! Meet some other paddlers. Share your secret favorite paddle with a wide-eyed “newbie” or a seasoned “creeker.” We are busy people too. There is likely even a related reason this pool schedule is coming out so late. Strictly our own fault, we have not posted lately. However: Schedule for indoor paddling 2009/10 This winter Black Hills Paddlers are again hosted by Rapid City Swim Center. FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH! That is 8 – 10 PM THIS Saturday, November 7!!!!!! Then, come back monthly all winter. Those dates are: - January 9 Note* This is second Saturday because of the New Year Holiday.
We LOVE new or veteran boaters, and everyone in between! Cost: $5.00 per paddler per session at front desk (Get wristband) AS always, BYOB (Clean ones!) & safety gear. This includes a helmet! Call Barb @ Global Market 343 4051 to rent. Pool Special: $10.00 for all to $1 for a helmet. (Please: Tell Barb what you want the boat for. Practicing rolling is not “just paddling around.”)
Again, BYOB (Clean ones!) & safety gear. This includes a helmet! Call Barb @ Global Market 343 4051 to rent. Pool Special: $10.00 for all to $1 for a helmet. Call Kelly at 484 4074 for questions about the RC Swim Center dates. |
