We know there are a lot more paddlers on the water in the Hills than this website shows. Show yourselves!
We are ALL guilty of going off on some really great paddles without letting other folks know so they could join us. Leroy Henderson is great about posting when he plans a trip, lets take his example and post in the forum when you are planning a trip. If you email the webmaster about a big event coming up we can send out a mini newsletter about an upcoming paddle. On that note there are 2 (maybe 3) great opportunities to paddle this weekend:
Nancy Smidt sent in notification of this paddle scheduled for Sunday:
We will be kayaking Sunday July 12, meeting at 8:00Am at my house if you are coming from anywhere besides Spearfish, in which case we will be meeting at the bridge off highway 85 to paddle the Redwater River. This will be a 13 mile paddle to Belle Fourche, if interested please email me: nas40 __at___ rushmore.com or call 347-1392.
Also Kelly Lane has this really cool paddling opportunity on Saturday:
Kelly will be paddling in Pierre on Saturday July 11th. Kelly and a couple of other paddlers will be meeting up with Joe Forrester. Joe is paddling the entire length of the Missouri river this summer to benefit Parkinson's research. Joe calls his trip "Paddling for Parkinsons", he is working on raising at least $20,0000 to hand directly to the National Parkinson's Foundation. Check out Joe's website at www.paddlingforparkinsons.com.
The plan is, weather permitting, Kelly and a friend are meeting a Pierre local to paddle along with Joe on Saturday. Kelly & Becky are planning on camping at the city campground in Pierre. If you are interested in joining in this adventure for a great cause please give Kelly a ring at 484-4074.
Once again, if you have ANY upcoming events please let people know about it! We had a GREAT time 2 weeks ago at Pactola, the weather was beautiful and we had a great crew. Thanks to everbody who came: The Coles from Newcastle, Nancy who from Sturgis, Rodger and Trevor from Rapid, and Eric from Spearfish. It was great to meet some new boaters! We had a nice little BBQ afterwards. I know Larry is interested in doing it again this weekend (Saturday). If anybody is interested give him a call at 307-746-2548.
Thanks for paddling, we'll see you on the water! |

Laurie Montgomery found her boat! Here's what she had to say: "Thanks so much for putting it on your website. Rita Chapman of Silver City found it for us!! A weekend resident was keeping it for some people who tried to pick it up and never came back to get it. You guys are great!" Laurie Montgomery sent this missing boat report in this morning: Some of us were out kayaking Jenny Gulch on Sunday. We had a rented trailer with nine kayaks onboard that we got from Ellsworth. As we were leaving Jenny Gulch Sunday evening about 9pm one of the kayaks fell off the trailer. We turned around to find it and it was gone. A small pick-up headed towards Silver City may have picked it up. It was an orangish Old Town Dirigo probably a 106, only about a year old. It should have AFP or ODR with a serial number inscribed on the bottom. It is Air Force property and we are liable for the cost of $530. Can you put out the word for us? My home number is 343-3586. Thanks so much! |

Black Hills Paddlers is again calling for volunteers to help with safety/coaching for groups of campers from Atlantic Mountain Ranch. These are middle school to high school mixed groups with adult sponsors. Typically they know "nothing" about paddling. Our goal is to show them a safe, fun day in a kayak. We begin in Pactola Lake at Jenny Gulch and finish in Rapid Creek just below Silver City. We can use help all day, but we MUST have help in the afternoons for the creek! We cannot put more campers in the moving water than we have experienced paddlers to "coach" them down the creek! Schedule is below. Please call Kelly if you can help any of these days, either all day or just for the afternooon. We usually head for home about 3:30-4:00 each day. Also, NO hauling boats from Rapid City this year! The program now has its OWN pfd's, helmets, skirts and paddles! We also have rounded up enough "spare" boats from a lot of good boater's "quivers" that we have boats and gear onsite for the groups. (THANKS to everybody who loaned us their boats!!!)
