Welcome to the new paddle season! Black Hills Paddlers has a busy year planned already. And that doesn't allow for things that always come up, things way too much fun to pass up! Here's just a partial list: · Definitely need to hook up more paddlers with each other. · Push safety and responsible boating. · Fund the Rapid City Paddle Park, anticipated opening spring 2010. · Publish maps and paddling guides for the many great paddle-routes in Western South Dakota. · Longer-term goals include your good ideas! On our list already: o instructor certification classes, o replace Canyon Lake Dam with a series of paddle structures, o paddling enhancements in Spearfish Creek, o citizen races, contests, gatherings to focus new boaters, recreational boaters, even gnarly old hair boaters (welcome back, John) about the safe fun our sport provides! |

Our East River Brethren the South Dakota Canoe Association are hosting a marathon kayaking race this September on the Missouri River. Here's some info from Jarett Bies:
- The South Dakota River Challenge will be Sept. 11-13, 2009.
- The race begins at Bob's Resort, located just north (on the river) of the U.S. Highway 212 bridge.
- Racers will start there and race to the take-out on the west side of Oahe at the dam, about 80 miles from the start. This is big water in a remote part of the state.
We seek racers - our web site will be up soon - but also volunteers who would be willing to help with support, safety, registration, and the awards.
We also are seeking sponsors. The event's website is here http://www.sdkayakchallenge.com/, and information about the SDCA can be found here: http://sdcka.blogspot.com/
I know I plan to compete, lets see how many West River paddlers we can get out there to represent! |
